Google Cloud is helping healthcare providers improve the quality of care and the patient experience with the launch of three new Healthcare Data Engine (HDE) accelerators.

Google's HDE is an insights and analytics tool that securely collects, stores, and processes healthcare data. Available in early 2023, the latest accelerators focus on three crucial aspects of care - health equity, patient flow, and value-based care.

"These accelerators, developed collaboratively with healthcare organizations, will solve a range of industry pain points, and they will unlock the truly transformative power of interoperable longitudinal patient records," said Aashima Gupta, global director of Google Cloud's Healthcare Strategy and Solutions.

What are the new Google Healthcare Data Engine accelerators?

1) Health Equity

The first accelerator will support health equity, leveraging Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) datasets, providing analytics, and giving healthcare providers the tools they need to connect patients with community resources. The accelerator will also include Health Level Seven (HL7) and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) data for longitudinal patient records.

2) Reinventing operations and experience

Staffing shortages and employee burnout are putting pressure on the healthcare system, creating long wait times and difficulty in booking appointments. The second accelerator focuses on patient flow to drive efficiencies and improve care by identifying bottlenecks and worrisome trends.

3) Improving the quality of care

To follow a value-based care model, providers must have access to data on service quality and outcomes. This accelerator combines claims with clinical data to help organizations identify areas of improvement.

Healthcare-focused

Google Cloud is no stranger to the healthcare space, having brought numerous innovations to the medical market since Google Health first launched in 2006.

The company has made several high-profile partnerships with hospitals, MedTech firms, clinics, and others in the sector, including a landmark partnership with iCAD to use mammogram AI technology to improve breast cancer detection and a collaboration with the Manipal Group in India to enhance virtual care delivery.

"At Google, we believe that technology — especially AI and analytics — can unlock a better future for health globally," says Google Chief Health Officer, Dr. Karen DeSalvo. "Technology has the power to eliminate health disparities and democratize access to healthcare. But we need to be intentional in our efforts to live up to our goal of improving the health of billions of people by building for everyone, everywhere."
