How to Migrate from Apple Mail to Google Apps
We haven’t forgotten about you, Mac lovers! If you have email data on your Mac computer that needs to be migrated to Google Apps, the Google Email Uploader will help - if you have Mac OS X 10.5 through Mac OS X 10.7. This migration tool works as well with Mozilla Thunderbird and Eudora email data. You can also import Entourage MBOX files to upload from the tool.
The first step is to back up your email data before getting started.
Once that is done, you’ll need to enable User Email Upload under the Gmail settings of the Google Apps admin console:
Navigate to Google Apps > Gmail > User settings
Scroll to User email upload
Check the box for "Allow users to upload mail using the Email Migration API”
You can then run the Google Email Uploader available at:
Navigate to the Downloads page and click on the zip file under Filename to download the program. Once that is done, close out your Mail program and open the Google Email Uploader. You will have the following options:
Select the folders you want to migrate. Under the Uploaded Selection tab, you will have the following options:
Preserve mail properties where possible (unread, trashed, starred, draft) - We recommend enabling this option which is selected by default.
Pull all uploaded mail in Inbox - This is not a recommended step if you already have a folder structure in place as all those organized emails will appear in your Inbox and get mixed with emails that were meant to remain in the Inbox (so are not included in another folder).
Assign mailbox names as Gmail label - This is recommended if you have a folder structure you want to replicate in your Google Apps mailbox.
Assign additional label - Here you can add an additional label to all uploaded emails in case you need to refer to them through that label or in case you want to run another migration from this mailbox in the future and need to delete the emails in that label to start fresh.
Under Google Account you will need to enter the Google Apps destination account then click Upload to start the migration.
You can pause the migration and resume it whenever necessary. The tool will notify you once the migration completes.
