It’s safe to say that it’s been a busy month for Google. The tech giant announced a whole host of new features for Google Workspace, previously known as G Suite. Google promised exciting new updates and features around the time of the rebranding. The recent announcements have delivered on all fronts, offering brand new features and functions that will take your collaboration and communication game to a whole new level.

The goal for Google Workspace has always been to make it the most integrated and collaborative suite on the market. With Google’s recent announcement about the “smart canvas,” that goal is close to being fully realized. Smart canvas helps Workspace users stay connected and work more productively by introducing new features like smart chips, checklist creation, intelligent links, pageless view formatting, a timeline view option in Sheets, and even the ability to present directly from within Docs, Sheets and Slides. The addition of Google Workspace’s smart canvas update is a clear gamechanger for all users, making it easier than ever to communicate, collaborate, and work smarter.

Smart chips make Google Workspace more interconnected than ever

While they’ve recently become a huge buzzword, the idea of smart chips isn’t a new thing in the Google Workspace ecosystem. Each time you mention a user within Google Docs with the “@” function, you’re inserting a smart chip. The expansion of the smart chip functionality will allow users to insert smart chips for other Workspace users, files, and events.

Using the “@” function, users can insert smart chips for their file or event of choice, making it easier than ever for collaborators to find exactly what they’re looking for without the need for switching between applications or files. Smart chips are a significant productivity play by Google, going even further to remove the need for time-consuming (and low reward) processes like constantly flipping back and forth between apps to find what you’re looking for.

Even better is that smart chips can be viewed within a resizable hover box, letting users read and scan documents, proposals and lists without leaving their original document. They can also be used to quickly pull up project management tables, meeting templates, and so much more, all of which is auto-populated with smart tags. The expansion of the smart chip functionality offers even more flexibility for users without learning a brand new concept or process, making it easier to adopt and use with no barriers to entry.

Other new features announced by Google

On top of the highly anticipated smart chips function, the Google Workspace smart canvas announcement contained a whole slew of exciting new features. Google announced that in the coming months, users will have the ability to quickly insert table templates into Docs, where users can gather feedback in one convenient location, automatically important meeting note templates from a Calendar meeting invite, an all-new pageless view format for Google Docs, which will make it easier to remove page boundaries for a more seamless reading experience, and a new timeline view in Google Sheets, which promises to make tracking tasks easier and faster than ever through advanced data organization.

The other big announcement is already making its presence felt. Google Workspace users can now present from Docs, Slides, and Sheets directly to Google Meet. This means you’ll be able to experience more seamless meetings, conference calls, and presentations with the ability to present content directly to an ongoing Google Meet call seamlessly. With just a few clicks, you can present content and see other Google Meet audience members simultaneously, making collaboration more effortless than ever before and eliminating the need for context switching so you can stay on course and deliver more natural presentations.
