New Google Apps for Work Admin Console Makes Managing Users Easier
The new Google Apps for Work admin console was redesigned in early 2015 as part of Material Design, a Google initiative to make all of its products easier to use. This means that items are much easier to find and work with where you expect to be looking for them. The biggest changes come not just in the look and feel, but in the ease with which you can manage users. All changes have been implemented for all Google Apps for Work clients as of early 2015, so you’ve probably already been using the new console for a bit if you’re a regular user.
The usual actions you are used to are accessible through icons and a top-level menu once you open up the console. Click on “More controls” to see more actions and drag and drop them to the main console if they are items that you use regularly.
Managing Users Just Got Much Easier
Most important items are listed in the menu beside each user, represented by 3 dots on the right-hand side of the screen. Reset, rename, delete, suspend or email a user from this menu. Additional options are available from the top right hand side of the screen.
You can add a user by clicking on the floating “+” button. To perform actions with multiple users, hover over each user’s picture to select them. Once you’ve selected multiple users, the top-level menu options change to options that will allow you to work with multiple users.
You can bring up detail on each user by clicking on their name, which will bring you to a page (or “card”, in Google terminology) for that user. Additional options will be available at the individual user level from this area.
Filters Still in Play
Google has kept filters accessible on the users page as grouping users by department, organization and other criteria remains very important to Google Apps for Work clients.
Quick Access to Service Subscription Information
Subscription information can be found on the “Billing” page.
Once you are on the Billing page, you can see all subscription-related items next to each listed product.
You Can Go Home Again
Getting back to the initial dashboard is easy. Click the nav icon on the toolbar (three horizontal lines) and you’ll see this dialogue:
