Pin Contacts, See Who’s Online Easier In Hangouts

by Koosha Araghi on August 26, 2014

Google Hangouts launched over a year ago as a huge update and replacement for Google Talk, the former chat protocol built into Gmail. The latest update today provides two features that help make the platform even easier to use.

Hangouts allow users to be connected from multiple devices at the same time. For example, I may have my inbox with Hangouts open on my iMac at work, along with my laptop that I've taken into the conference room for a meeting, and on my mobile for the times I'm away from my desk. Because of the constantly connected style, sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint when users are actually active and online.

One of the features released today provides an additional tab to hangouts that shows friends that are online first, as opposed to a short list of users that you are most active with. For users that prefer this additional view, Google has also implemented a way to pin contacts to the top of the list, regardless of their online status. Regardless of which view you prefer, you will still be able to message those that are offline and they will see it the next time they log in through any of the devices they use.

The latest update to Hangouts will be rolling out in the next couple days.
