Project of the Month: Integrating Sugar with a Legacy CRM System
Last Friday I sat down with UpCurve Cloud Engineer Keith Neuendorf and had the chance to learn about his project of the month. The customer wanted to switch over to SugarCRM but also needed to keep key areas of their old Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. So rather than scrapping their old system and starting anew, Keith was faced with the challenge of integrating it into their new SugarCRM system. Below are some of the questions I asked him during our interview. Here he explains why he integrated the systems, how he was able to manage the integration, and what software he used to streamline the process.
Q: Can you explain the project you are currently working on?
A: I am currently helping a client switch over from their old CRM system to SugarCRM. Their previous CRM was extremely limited and they wanted access to some of the helpful features Sugar offers, such as reports and lead tracking. Because they still relied on a few features from their old system, we decided to use Sugar as the front end of access to those features. This allowed both CRM systems to be available in Sugar but only allowed new information to be updated through Sugar.
Q: How do you come up with these solutions? Is it company influenced, client motivated, or both?
A: The process can be both company influenced and client motivated. We work with the client to determine what features they need to make their work easier and more cost-effective. Once a project is mapped out, we then determine the solutions we will need. Mostly, we stick to Sugar but sometimes we use other software packages to help streamline the process.
Q: You mentioned that you use other software tools besides Sugar. What software packages do you find the most helpful for this project?
Q: What do you like about this project?
A: I enjoy the process of interfacing their old system to Sugar because it allows me to be more creative. I also enjoy creating a new account wizard. This wizard takes the user step by step through the creation process and benefits our client by making the process of adding new accounts less prone to error.
