Sugar User Group: Email Campaigns (Part 2)

On 3/6/2012 UpCurve Cloud’s Engineering Manager, Eric Wikman hosted part 2 of a 3 part online training series. Topics included how to create email templates and newsletters, embed tracker links and create target, suppression, test, and seed lists in Sugar. He wrapped up the user session with a Q&A. Here are some of the most common questions we received and answers from the session.

Q. Would the tracker still work for the plain text recipient?

A. No. There is no way to track a plain text email that has been opened. In order for Sugar to track an opened email, images must be loaded and displayed. If the recipient is using an email client that is plain text only, the HTML image is stripped out not displayed. The capability to only track opened HTML emails is consistent across all campaign systems.

Q. What is the difference between External Email Client and Sugar Email Client? Why would you choose one over the other?

A. What you are referring to is the standard email functionality in Sugar. On your user settings page, you have the ability to specify the use of the external email client or the Sugar email client. It is located at the bottom of the user settings page. If you select the Sugar email client, anytime you click on an email address in Sugar, it’s going to open inside of Sugar (i.e. you have the ability to type and send an email in the Sugar page). You can then send that email to Sugar. After it is sent, that email will automatically be archived with the correct record. If you choose an external email client in the user settings page, when you click an email address inside of Sugar, it will open up your regular email client in a separate window (i.e. Microsoft Outlook, etc.). You would then type and send your email as you normally would using that email client. However, that email will not be archived into Sugar.

Q. We are currently using analytics to track our web activity. Is there a way to feed analytics with Sugar Campaigns? Can I use Google’s URL Builder Tool for tracking?

A. Yes. You have the option to use a third-party service to keep track of your URLs, like Google Analytics. To only use the Google Analytics tracking code, insert the Google provided link in your email template. This is done by clicking the chain-link icon in the Rich Text Editor and pasting the Google link there. That would allow that link to be tracked by Google Analytics as opposed to Sugar. To use both Sugar tracking and Google Analytics tracking, you would use the Google link when creating the tracker URL.

Q. What if you wanted to use both Sugar tracking and Google tracking for one link in the same email?

A. Instead of putting the final destination when creating the tracker, you would put in the Google-provided URL. This makes Google Analytics the destination. When the recipient clicks on that link in the email, it would first direct them to the CRM, then redirect them to Google Analytics. Google Analytics would then redirect them to the final destination. This way the link would get properly reflected in both Sugar and in Google Analytics.
